The Horses Are Coming! The Horses Are Coming!

Who/What/Where
Chicago had painted cows. Cincinnati had painted pigs. Norfolk had mermaids and Tampa had turtles. New Orleans had A Festival of Fins, and Charlotte had Chairs on Parade. Nashville and Cleveland had guitars. Belzoni, MS, the catfish capital, had catfish! Athens, GA said, "We Let The Dawgs Out" with dogs. New Mexico has The Trail of The Painted Ponies, which has diversified into a big business. Lexington and Louisville, Ocala and Saratoga are few of the other cities who have featured horses.

So with a wonderful horse heritage and a charity horse show that is known far and wide, Germantown, Tennessee, celebrated the Germantown Charity Horse Show's 60th Anniversary in 2008 with a 21 Horse Salute.

The painted horses were placed in public in June of 2008, and remained there until October of that year, when they were corralled for a big party and auction. The buyers kept the painted horses, and 10 percent of the purchase price went to the artist. Forty-five percent the purchase price went to the Germantown Charity Horse Show, and the other 45 percent was donated to the charity of the buyer's choice.

Today, many of the painted horses dot the landscape of Germantown, adding charm and beauty to their surroundings, and reminding us of the importance to the community of the noble horse.
